Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity's Mission
Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people of all faiths and races to develop communities for people in need by building and renovating houses, creating homeownership opportunities.
Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity
A local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization that works in partnership with families in need of housing to build simple, decent and affordable homes. Houses are sold to qualified homebuyers at no profit through no-interest mortgage loans. Homebuyers must first meet the requirements of Chesapeake Habitat’s program, including the completion of 350 “sweat equity” hours. Homebuyers work alongside thousands of community volunteers to complete homes in several Baltimore City communities.
Since 1982, Chesapeake Habitat has completed more than 120 homes and has housed more than 300 family members, including at least 190 children.
History of Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity
Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity, incorporated in 1982, became one of the first urban affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International. Under the tireless direction of our first president, Lynwood B. Jenkins, Chesapeake Habitat pioneered the use of Habitat International's principles in a city setting. At the time, more than 6,000 vacant houses blighted the landscape of Baltimore. While most Habitat for Humanity affiliates build new houses from the foundation up, Chesapeake Habitat's Board of Directors decided to renovate the existing housing stock in order to provide safe, affordable homes while eliminating vacant properties.
Chesapeake Habitat continues to carry out the principles envisioned by its founders by renovating vacant houses for homeownership and selling them at their appraised value to lower-income families. Chesapeake Habitat for Humanity is an independent affiliate of HFHI. We receive training and support from HFHI, but we rely completely on local supporters for funding and volunteer labor.
Habitat for Humanity International
The Ultimate Goal of Habitat for Humanity is to elimnate poverty housing and homelessness from the face of the earth by building simple, decent housing.
Furthermore, all of our words and actions are for the ultimate purpose of putting shelter on the hearts and minds of people in such a powerful way that poverty housing becomes socially, politically, and religiously unacceptable in our nations and world.
